I’ve heard that New Yorkers pronounce merry, Mary, and marry differently while non-New Yorkers pronounce them the same. I’m from Chicago but I pronounce them differently though. When pronounced, the e in merry is the shortest, the a in Mary is a little longer, and the a in marry is the longest. However, you don’t really need to pay attention to the differences in sounds because you can tell which one is used by paying attention to the grammar and how the word is used in sentences. (Merry is an adjective, Mary is a noun, and marry is a verb).
ニューヨーカーたちはmerryとMaryとmarryを違う発音で言い、ニューヨーカー以外の人たちは全てを同じ発音で言うと聞いたことがあります。私はシカゴ出身ですが、3つを違う発音で言っています。merryのeは一番短く発音し、Maryのaが少々長め、marryのaは一番長いです。ただし、音の違いはそこまで気にする必要はありません。なぜなら、音よりも文法（文脈）で、どれが一番適切なのかを見極めることができるからです。（merryは形容詞の位置、Maryは名詞の位置、marryは動詞の位置にないといけないので。

One Japanese person asked me, “Can I say Happy Christmas? Is it wrong?” I answered, “It’s not wrong. Some people say Happy Christmas.” Then, I wondered why we usually say “Merry” Christmas and not “Happy” Christmas?
ある日本人に、「Happy Christmasと言っても良いのでしょうか？間違っていますか？」と聞かれたことがありました。「間違っていませんよ。Happy Christmasと言う人もいますよ」と答えましたが、なぜHappy Christmasとはあまり言わずに、Merry Christmasと言うのかなと疑問に思いました。

So, I looked the word “merry” up in a dictionary and I saw the words like “cheerful”, “lively” and “joyous” as the definitions. Also, I found an article that said, “happy is a word to describe an emotion and merry is a word to describe a behavior.”
辞書でmerryを調べると、「明るい、陽気な、楽しい、賑やか、活発、喜びに満ちた」等というような単語で説明されていました。また、ある記事には、「happyは感情に対して使う形容詞で、merryは行動に対して使う形容詞です」と書いてありました。

When we wish someone a “happy birthday”, we don’t expect that person to do anything. We just want him/her to be happy. However, when we wish someone a “merry Christmas”, I think we expect that person to take actions to make people happy. I think it is because Christmas is a day to celebrate Jesus’ birthday, who showed us how to love.
私たちが「ハッピー・バースデー（誕生日おめでとう！ ）」と誰かに言う時、私たちはその人に何かしてもらうことを期待してはいないと思います。誕生日の人には、ただハッピーになって欲しいことを願うと思います。しかし、私たちが「メリー・クリスマス」と言う時、私は言われた人が周りの人たちをハッピーにするために、何かしらのアクションを取ることを期待して、そのように言っているのではないかと思います。その理由は、クリスマスはイエス・キリストの誕生日をお祝いする日で、イエスは行動を通して私たちに愛を示してくれたから、私たちも同じように行動を通して愛を示すべきだと思います。
