Have you seen a commercial or an ad that said, “New and improved!”? One of my teachers in middle school or high school (I forgot which) said, “How can something be both new and improved because new means it didn’t exist before and improved means it’s better than it used to be?” I remember totally agreeing with what he said.
アメリカのコマーシャルでたまに「New and improved!」というような表記がされていることがあります。私が中学生か高校生の時か忘れましたが、先生の一人が、「Newは新しいということで、今までに存在していなかったもの。そして、improvedは今までのものが改善されてよりよくなったものということで、二つは矛盾している！」と言っていました。「確かに！」とすごく納得した思い出があります。

However, is it really impossible for something to be both new and improved? I actually started thinking that it could be possible. If we have a new idea a perspective or a new attitude toward something, then it would be something new but at the same time, we (our existence) are improved from our old selves.
ただ、本当にNewとImprovedと両方になることは不可能なのでしょうか？私は実はその後、ものによっては可能ではないかと思うようになりました。もし私たちが新しい考え方や価値観など、もしくは何かに対する新しい姿勢や態度を持つようになった場合、それらは今までに存在していなかったのでnewになりますが、「私たち」という存在（肉体）は今までにもあったので、new & improvedということになるのではないでしょうか？
