How do you decide what is good and what is bad? How do you know what is good and what is bad? Do you have a standard for what is good and what is bad?
あなたはどのように良いことと悪いことを判断していますか？良いことを悪いことの違いは何でしょうか？良いことと悪いことを見極める基準はありますか？

Today is “Good Friday” for Christians. You might not know what it is, but without it, there would be no Easter, and I think many of you know or have heard Easter since even Disney celebrates it.
今日はクリスチャンにとって「グッド・フライデー（良い金曜日）」という日です。聞いたことがないかもしれませんが、この日が無いとイースターも無くなりますし、イースターならディズニーなどでも祝われているので、聞いたことがあるという人も多いのではないでしょうか？

In Japan, Good Friday is called “Junanbi”. It is written as 受難日 In Japanese kanji characters. 受 means “receive”, 難 means “difficulty, hardship, trouble”, and 日 means “day”. “Receiving Hardship day” doesn’t sound like a good day. Why is it “Good” in English but sounds bad in Japanese? Are they pointing at the same thing? How can something be good and bad at the same time?
「グッド・フライデー」は日本では「受難日」と呼ばれています（教会・教団によっては「聖金曜日」と呼ばれてもいるようです）。「受難日」はあまり良い日には聞こえないですね・・・なぜ英語圏では「グッド（良い）」なのに日本語では「受難」という悪そうな響きの名称になっているのでしょうか？両方とも同じ日のことを指しているのでしょうか？あるものが良くもあり同時に悪くもありえるのでしょうか？

Easter is the day to celebrate Jesus coming back to life after dying on the cross and put in a tomb. He came back to life on the third day of his crucification, and the third day happened to be a Sunday, so Christians always celebrate Easter on a Sunday.
ちなみにイースターは日本では「復活祭」と言われ、十字架で死なれたイエス・キリストが十字架で死なれた後、お墓に入れられて、3日目に死から蘇られたことを祝う日です。蘇った日はちょうど日曜日だったのでイースターは毎年日曜日にお祝いします。

So, why is the day Jesus died on the cross, which was Friday, considered as “Good Friday”? If He died (with a lot of pain and suffering), wouldn’t it be a bad day?
ではなぜ、イエス・キリストが十字架で死なれた金曜日が「良い金曜日」になるのでしょうか？イエスが痛みで苦しみ死んだのであれば「悪い日」になるのではないでしょうか？

Actually, many people back then did think it was bad. When Jesus was crucified, almost all of his disciples and followers had abandoned Him. Moreover, after He died, they were all hiding in sadness and shame. Many people thought that He was not God because He looked poor and weak and died.
実は当時の多くの人たちはそれは「悪いこと」だと思っていました。 イエス・キリストが十字架にかけられた時、彼の弟子たちや彼についてきていた人たちは彼を見捨てて逃げてしまっていました。さらに、イエス・キリストが死んだ後、彼らは悲しみと恥を感じ、隠れていました。多くの人たちはイエス・キリストが貧しくて弱く見えていたことや、死んでしまったことを理由に、イエス・キリストは神ではないと思いました。

However, Jesus came back to life to prove that He was God! His death on the cross was “good” because if you believe that Jesus is God and He died on the cross for your sins, you don’t have to pay for your sins because Jesus already paid for you!
しかし、イエス・キリストは死から蘇り、神だということを証明され、彼の十字架での死は「良いもの」となりました。なぜなら、もしあなたがイエスは神だと信じ、あなたの罪のために死なれたと信じるのであれば、あなたの罪の責任は彼がすでに取られたことになるからです。

Also, Jesus said that there is no greater love than someone laying down his life for his friends, and Jesus calls us His friends and died for us! It is sad and unfortunate that He had to suffer and die but what He did was very good!
さらに、イエス・キリストは「人がその友のために自分の命を捨てること、これよりも大きな愛はない」と言っていて、彼は私たちを「友」と呼ばれ、十字架で死なれました。彼が苦しみと共に死んだことはとても悲しく残念なことですが、彼が私たちのためにされたことは本当に「良いこと」だと思います。

Now, why do Japanese Christians call “Good Friday” “Receiving Hardship Day”? It doesn’t sound like a good day… I think it is because they are just very humble and caring, so they don’t want to lable something “good” when someone is in pain or suffering. “Receiving hardship” sounds bad but it can be good when you change your perspectives.
では、なぜ日本人は「グッド・フライデー」のことをあまり良いものとは聞こえない「受難日」と呼んでいるのでしょうか？私は、日本人がとてもへりくだっていて、相手の事を気遣う人たちなので、誰かが苦しんでいることを「良いこと」とは言いたくないのだと思います。「受難」という言葉だけだとあまり「良いこと」して聞こえないと思いますが、視点を変えると良いことにもなりえますね。

Long story short, I think what is good and what is bad depends on your perspectives. I think there are many other things that can be good or bad. I will write about the standard for what is good and what is bad in the next post so please stay tuned!
